In a shocking development that may put a quick end to Hollywood's infatuation with their latest spiritual fad, a leader of the modern Kabbalah discipline blamed Jews for the Nazi Holocaust, claiming that they disdained the "Light" and brought the genocide onto themselves:

Eliyahu Yardeni, of the London Kabbalah Centre, made the astonishing claim to an undercover reporter investigating high-pressure sales techniques employed by the group, which promotes its own brand of beliefs, part ancient Jewish mysticism and part pseudo-science.

The probe also revealed how Kabbalah Centre representatives claimed bottles of "healing" spring water sold by the group could help cure cancer - and how they sold a batch to a sufferer for hundreds of pounds.

Talking about the wartime massacre of the Jews, Mr Yardeni said: "Just to tell you another thing about the six million Jews that were killed in the Holocaust: the question was that the Light was blocked. They didn't use Kabbalah."

That will be news to the survivors and their families, as well as to millions of Jews in general. The center's apparent philosophy on Nazi atrocities came as part of a sales pitch for the modern version of an ancient and respected Hebrew discipline. The new and hip Hollwood version, according to the BBC, sells bottled water with supposed miraculous qualities, even though it's produced by a Canadian company with previous government warnings on its quality.

Practitioners of the ancient Kabbalah protest against the hucksterism of the cultish London center, which has captivated Madonna, David Beckham, Demi Moore, and other high-octane celebrities trying to appear spiritually enlightened. Israel refuses to certify it as a proper charity for accounting irregularities, and Britain has criticized it for the same reasons.
