Broder Sticks To His Guns

David Broder took Democrats to task for allowing an incompetent like Harry Reid to rise to party leadership, pointing out several of the Senator's foolish foibles as examples. This column sent the netroots into a tizzy, with many of them declaring Broder as irrelevant and past his expiration date. The Senate Democratic caucus even sent him a letter, signed by all 50 members, extolling the virtues of Reid and lauding his "straight talk" -- apparently all endorsing the notion that we have lost the war in Iraq.

Today, Editor & Publisher caught up Broder, who has no intention of retracting his remarks:

David Broder said he wouldn't change anything in his April 26 column, which angered many readers and caused 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus to write a letter criticizing Broder in Friday's Washington Post.

In that Thursday piece, Broder criticized Harry Reid for saying the Iraq War is lost militarily, compared Reid to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, and concluded: "The Democrats deserve better, and the country needs more, than Harry Reid has offered as Senate majority leader."

"I still think the Democrats can do better, and should do better," said Broder, when reached today by E&P. ... Broder told E&P that he was "astonished and delighted" that 50 Democratic senators "spontaneously" came up with the letter (adding that he was being "tongue-in-cheek").

The letter was something of a non-sequitur. His criticism wasn't that Reid spoke his mind, but that he put his foot in his mouth when he did. Declaring a war "lost" while American troops are still fighting -- and making progress -- reveals a hysterical streak that doesn't reflect well on leadership. As Broder pointed out in the column, not even the people who signed the letter would defend what Reid said, instead trying to use Clintonian word parsing to make it appear that Harry Reid had not just capitulated to terrorists in Anbar and Baghdad. Calling the President a "loser" may make the netroots swoon with delight, but it hardly makes for a professional atmosphere between Congress and the White House.

Also, the final argument that Democrats made in defending Reid is simply hilarious. They applaud the fact that he passed a budget bill, and noted only that "great strides" had been taken on everything else. Granted, the Republicans refused to do it themselves after the midterms, preferring to let the Democrats deal with it, but every Congress passes budget bills; the 109th did it, too. If that's the threshold for excellence in Washington, then there can be no such thing as mediocrity. Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations!

Broder had to have laughed himself silly at that letter, and the Democrats had to be silly to write it. Is the Senate Democratic Caucus so sensitive that it must write group letters every time they receive criticism? No wonder these people want to run away from the terrorists in Iraq. They can't even abide David Broder and the Washington Post opinion section.

UPDATE: It's "The soft bigotry of low expectations." I didn't quote it properly, but thanks to CQ reader Susan, I've corrected it now.

When you think about the kinds of things that the Bush administration has to listen to year in and year out, the Democrats look like crybabies whining about something like this.

" caused 50 members of the Senate Democratic Caucus to write a letter criticizing Broder in Friday's Washington Post "

This must be a typo! Only 50??? Shouldn't it be 51? I mean, Chuck Hagel HAD to have signed this, didn't he?

I think that Broder (and the Washingtion Post, for that matter) had better watch their backs. Remember the explicit threats Democrats made against ABC concerning "The Path to 9/11"? Undoubtedly the Democrat Party would prefer to start its crackdown on civil liberties with the GOP and "right wing talk radio". But they won't hesitate to go after Broder - and the Washingtion Post - if they get in the way.

In the end I suspect that Broder will come crawling back to the Democrat plantation. He is a moron, and the fact that the scales have (temporarily) fallen from his eyes does not impress me.

Democrats! Resembling NOTHING so much these days as the pure unadulterated cacaphony of the demon hordes from Hell.

It is sad to see someone aim oneself towards nothing more in eternity than being one of the mass of a plague of locusts.

When even a left-wing hack like Broder can recognize Reid for the imbecile that he is, I have to wonder if Reid hasn't done the GOP a major favor. I visualize an '08 campaign ad consisting of two alternating quotes, one of Reid promising not to pull support from our troops in the field, one of him declaring the war lost, both superimposed over a jackass background. While the quotes are alternating every couple of seconds I hear a tape of John Kerry saying "I was for it before I was against it" over and over again.

I added an excerpt and link to my "2007.04.30 Dem Perfidy // Islamism Delenda Est Roundup -- Breaking: Bush to veto Oink and Run bill tomorrow" post.

IIRC, the filthy dems decided that they needed to "toughen up" their image after the '04 elections. No more Mister Nice Guy! They were too soft, too nice, too easy-going in the face of Karl Rove's attack machine, and it cost them! No more! Hence, Reid calling W a "loser" and declaring that we've lost in Iraq is simply par for the course. The dems, morally and intellectually bankrupt as they are, have decided that this is the way to prove to the American people that they've got what it takes. Yessir, calling the president names, cutting 'n' running in Iraq, stabbing our troops in the back... THAT'S how dems show the American people that they can be trusted to make the hard decisions and fight the tough fights! Broder's lucky to get off with only a sharply-worded letter! If he REALLY makes the dems mad... Well, he'd better watch out, that's all.

/sarcasm

When long-time libs like Joe Lieberman and David Broder have a problem with what the dems are doing, one would think they might take a moment to reconsider their direction. Sadly, the average dem hasn't got sufficient wits to read a street sign. They (mis)read the tea leaves from the '06 elections, decided that bashing Bush and surrendering in Iraq was quite a sufficient platform for '08, and so they see no need to practice anything remotely like statesmanship. The dems' campaign platform may be summed up as follows:

F*** bipartisanship, f*** statesmanship, f*** the troops, f*** Iraq, f*** the war, f*** "the rich", f*** the country, and above all, F*** GEORGE BUSH!

I saw a woman do that one time when she ran off her husband and her children, and sat alone in her house telling herself and anyone who would listen how terribly they all had treated HER.

I kept thinking, this time, she will get it.

Then another time, THIS time she will get it.

Then another time, THIS time she will get it.

Seems the entire event was just way too incremental, and it all went straight over her head.

The Dims and GOP both look that way to me, now.

Broder is a old senile fool. He still thinks the media in this country revolves around the inside-the-beltway hacks like himself. Another thing about what Reid say you gop propagandist, he said the war is lost if we keep following Bush's stategy. Shame on you Captain. Reid is the Senate MAJORITY LEADER. Daily Kos took a poll on how we dems liked his leadership, 94% approved. Read it and weep. We don't care what senile Broder or the conservative noise machine say about him. Savvy, pilgrims?

"I still think the Democrats can do better, and should do better," said Broder,...

Okay, Mr Broder, namer one Democrat Senator, who actually would do better than Dingy Harry. I can't think of one from that bunch of no-accounts.

Harry Reid - weak as a kitten, corrupt to the core, dumb as a rock and a traitor to his country, is Harry Reid. And a jackass to boot.

Harry "Judas" Reid is the corpse-like symbol of the absolutely and completely worthless Democrat Party.

That anyone could possibly see this sad excuse for a "man" as a leader, just proves how dangerous it is to inhale paint fumes.

Well, the only Democrat that could do better was Zell Miller, but he is no longer in Congress. What a loss.

Currently, the Senate Democrats are as like as peas in a pod. They are interchangeable. They all sound alike, and they are starting to blend together, making it virtually impossible to separate them.

It's a round about way to hit on an important topic.

The Ma and Pa Kettle Show is definitely from the left. And, it's there to keep everything at 50% PLUS ONE.

That's on par with a juggler dropping half the dishes. But he's not fired. As long as half the dishes, plus one; don't fall on the floor and break.

So I can understand Broder's complaint.

But the curious thing is that the left's not complaining. The complaints, here, by definition, are the stuff ya hear on the right.

Where it's obvious Ma and Pa Kettle don't think you have a chance to get to the middle. Or to influence the votes, enough; that the CONGRESS doesn't stay in the hands of the experts.

What do I mean by "experts." Well? The donks have controlled the wealth of this nation; where they famously sup on pork tits. And, they're not letting any of the "wants or desires" of a good portion of the American body politic to even get heard.

Part of this, I think, is that the left "gets the majority" because the GOP is seen as a bunch of blue nose "losers" ... interested in impeding freedom. Sort'a like putting up the right's version of traffic lights. Stopping people from having choices; once in and out of the bedroom. Prohibitions have a record of killing parties. Lincoln knew this when he saw the WHIGS go down the tubes.

Yes, Lincoln stayed afloat. And, grabbed the raft that came his way; the republican party.

You'd think with Lincoln as your Banner President; things could be better. But they're not.

As a matter of fact, the donks, whose strengths come from the south; did stuff to stay in power; that's pretty impressive. Sort'a like a sports record. Where the batting percentages sail above average.

The GOP has had disaster years. And, disaster decades. And, DeLay's inside view? Newt Gingrich wasn't a tip-top leader. And, Dick Armey was basically there for himself. Or out-to-lunch.

When George Allan couldn't defeat James Webb; you begin to understand something about these "under-swings." No one's looking to sock anything out of the park. Just to keep touching one base, after another. And, getting into Congress; where they wrote the rules.

Today, I thought to myself, that if I could talk to Guiliani. If he'd take my questions. I'd ask him about how Dubya has kept the GOP supressed. Because? I think he has.

And, since the Ma and Pa Kettle show is very straight-forward; what would work best to counter this? And, ya know? I think the answer would be PERSONALITY. And, an ability to communicate with large numbers of people.

Hillary, by the way, doesn't have the talent. Even Eleanor Roosevelt was an "aquired taste." But Eleanor's advantage was that her husband couldn't walk. And, as soon as he was elected governor of New York State; she became the set of legs he trusted. She did manage her end of it quite well.

Hillary doesn't even have this talent! When Bill's on the stage, no one looks at her.

Oh. And, Eleanor Roosevelt wore hats.

At one time a hat could help ya. Since it covered your head. You could dip the crown down. And, the picture taker didn't necessary get those bad shots, that could ruin your day.

Again, I do not know what will happen ahead.

Politics is very much like wars. And, currently you can hear the books exploding around Dubya. Written by those who fell under his bus. Not that that's a bad thing.

Only that it breaks the Sun Tsu rule. Where you go to bed at night, where during the day you made yourself more enemies.

With Tenet? Who knew the Medal of Freedom wouldn't shut him up?

And, what does that mean? In Insta-Pundit's wonderful link, on this very subject, today; he gave Tenet the OUCH; that brings joy to those who click the link. And, read all about it. The "back fire" to Tenet is there. But it still doesn't help Dubya.

Sort'a like watching a bunch of GOP cars petering out around the turns.

At least? The donks aren't even looking for more than half, with that extra one.

You'd think this would make the competition overjoyed at the opportunities.

But so far? No one's stepping ahead to claim the crown.

While I think whoever is gonna run for the donks in 2008; hasn't appeared yet on the scene, at all. It's gonna be a "mystery challenger." Like they used to do on What's My Line.

The senate, by the way, as a general rule, does not produce men who are then successful presidents.

And, given that nancy pelosi got the charges against DeLay, in the House, to stick ... On Ethics rules "adopted by the GOP" when Newt Gingrich put them there ... I wouldn't be so fast with the call, now, that either one is a flake. I wouldn't call the Godfather, as Mario Puzo described him, as a "flake" either.

People who know power? Exercise it well. And, it keeps the opposition from growing strong. Dem's da rules of da game. Kapish?

conservative democrat,

You stated:

"Daily Kos took a poll on how we dems liked his leadership, 94% approved. Read it and weep"

Now, although I am STILL laughing at that, I do want you to consider one thing. Considering the source of your poll, are you sure the readership of that blog didn't confuse Harry Reid with Harry Potter?

conservative democrat said:

"Daily Kos took a poll on how we dems liked his leadership, 94% approved. "

BWAHAHAHA! First of all, it's an ONLINE poll, which is totally worthless. It can be voted on repeated times, and at last check, it had over 19,000 votes. And relying on polls that ONLY include people with the same party affiliation of who you're asking the question about isn't "polling", it's a joke.

If you look at "real" polls, here are the results:

http://www.pollingreport.com/R.htm

The most recent poll, by The Harris Poll, has the following results:

"How would you rate the job Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is doing: excellent, pretty good, only fair, or poor?"

Excellent/Pretty Good: 22%
Fair/Poor: 52%

The Fair/Poor rating is 5% HIGHER than it was 2 months ago.

ABC/Washington Post Poll, April 12-15 2007

"Do you approve or disapprove of the way Harry Reid is handling his job as majority leader of the Senate?"

Approve: 46%
Disapprove: 33%
Unsure: 21%

Pew Research Center for the People & the Press survey

"Do you approve or disapprove of the way Harry Reid is handling his job as Senate majority leader?"

CE: Is the Senate Democratic Caucus so sensitive that it must write group letters every time they receive criticism?

"Yes" in cases like this. The Democrats know that a complicit MSM is their ace in the hole to drive an agenda. Any kink undermines that propaganda streak and could present/expose a crack in the foundation of their arguments. That a long-time ally says it makes it considerably more destructive.

The singular most powerful arrow in the Democrat quiver is a sycophantic press. It all starts and ends there despite alternative media. The caucus, whether all of its members agree with Reid or not, must coalesce to present a united front because they know they cannot lose control of the megaphone.

Harry Reid should look at the bright side; he is now apparently, reading the above comments, a full member of the “Incompetent & Brain-Dead” club. After getting is diploma from the “Decider” himself, GeorgyHBushy, he will able to play with his abundant new friends; Rumy, Gonzy, Ricy, Browny, Wolfy, Foly, Hasty, etc, etc, etc. My God, what a bunch of happy fellows!

Broder is just speaking truth to power.

What is so lame of course is that the dems had to respond en masse. So maybe truth to "power" is a bit if a non sequitir.

Talk about thin skin and spinelessness. David Broder criticizes one of their own and they practically break down crying.

The daily Kos reaction:
"He is not as bad as Alberto Gonzales, you meany David Broder! He is not a hack! Don't say such mean things!!!
C'mon everybody, group hug! It's ok Harry, flip that frown updside down and make it a big happy smile. Don't listen to Broder he's just an inside the beltway hack, us Kos kids still love you. Let's put up a big happy poll to show how great Harry is and how mean and nasty David Broder is."

what a bunch of crybabies.

David Broder just showed his left wing constituency that Emperor Reid has no clothes. Of course the Kos Krowd is so blinded by their BDS that they cannot see.

Kudo's to Duncan Hunter for calling on Reid to step down. I will be paying closer attention to his presidential bid from here on out.

Bigotry of low expectations? Since when are we all being served?

What politics is "about" ... which is similar to the theater ... but in the movies you need better looks ... Is that some people are cut out for this work. While most aren't.

And, they do ALL they have to do to get elected.

While tastes among individuals come in such a wide assortment, it resembles snowflakes.

Do people go into the voting booth, as if they're trying on a dress? HELLO. Do you know how many garmments a woman takes in to try on?

At the cheap stores, they have tickets. And, you're told. "You can't try on more than 8."

Oh. And, you get shopping carts. So you can take a lot of stuff with you, to the register.

Politics is NOT like that!

Now, what's interesting, is that most of us don't see a single candidate we like very much. And, it would be threatening if this was all the selection you got, if it were to find a mate. But you don't get to take these people home. So, your personal tastes aren't a big deal ... at the other end. Where politicians get up EVERY MORNING, knowing they're gonna have to ask for money.

Handshake. And, ask for money. About the only thing it has in it, that you can compare to religion. The guy at the door, of your local parish, needs to know how to make you turn over money. So the lights go on. And, things like that. The more you want to participate; the more likely you'll be generous.

Last time I looked, most of us haven't given a single dime to most candidates. Again, the only thing you're being asked for though, is your vote.

And, before women voted, the trade was to give a man a free stiff drink. AFTER he put his X on a piece of paper. And, you made sure of it. (Even though it was all a big fat secret, RIIGHT?)

I was always fascinated by inviting voters in for a drink. And, still? We've got a great Republic. When the presidential elections are over; most of the nation comes together. To see what the "winnah" does as he gets to wake up at the White House. (Or as Ronald Reagan called it: "Living above the store.)

And, it's here that the most powerful party in this nation, the democraps, pretty much know they're ahead. As Tom DeLay said. They've been in charge of the government throughout most of the years since FDR got elected President. That's a big time frame.

And, the way the rules are written you only need 50%, plus ONE EXTRA. And, when you find that you're actually at that center line, year in and year out; you can keep winning. As long as your oponent puts up duds.

You're also blaming the Ma and Pa Kettle show, for all of your troubles. Why? They look so harmless. That it seems just like Barnum figured out. The clowns make the kids laugh. And, when the high wire act falls down, sans net. The clowns immediately drag the kids away from looking at the "splat."

Again, sometimes you can change a business model.

But where's your leader?

Tom DeLay got into the HOUSE in 1980. On Reagan's coattails. He was among 6 HOUSE members voted in, in Texas, that were Republican.

Again, he tells a very interesting story.

And, he points to internal troubles. Men who aren't clued in on how to lead. And, Gingrich did more harms than good. Because instead of leading, he posed in front of the cameras every day. And, spouted some new plan. DeLay said it drove everyone in the House crazy. One day it was this. The next it was something wholely different. You just never knew.

You also know from your own experiences that "things happened." And? Bill Clinton could not be dislodged from the Presidency; even though, later Livingston could not occupy the Majority Speaker's seat; because he had a less than monogamous marriage. And, Newt, trying to appear heroic; actually pushed that poison pill down the GOP members' throats. By then? DeLay was probably the only man NOT screwing anything that moved. He says he was bad. He says he was very bad. And, then because he had someone leaning on him. Who exposed him to Dobson. He cried through the video that straigntened him out.

Again. DeLay was spouting the stuff on the right as soon as he got into Congress. He doesn't turn around for at least five years!

And, that's how charges of hypocracy land.

Why did Newt push the GOP House Members into this silly commitment? The donks don't do it.

Yeah. I know. It drives you crazy. But the donks never went down the "ethics" road created by Newt Gingrich; who was also sleeping around.

A lot of people figured that out right away.

As to the impeachment? Clinton didn't lose his job. But House members, who went home got butt kicked out of office in 1998. "Safe seat?"

Not safe enough.

I'm not suggesting you take advice from clowns.

I'm only saying that as things currently are; the donks are holding onto the middle. The FIFTY. And, last November? They grabbed that extra 1%. With Nancy's ad, that she had a rag. And, now that she doesn't menstruate anymore; she could use it on the windows. "To clean up the House." She gave herself 100 days. Let me tell you this. That rag saw no sunlight. The lady doesn't lift brooms.

And, to think of her as "over the hill," misses what she does know about politics.

As to the name-calling? What rot. People here are so angry they see themselves practically kicking the furniture; to blow off their steam at the Kos kids.

If the donks weren't on a roll, though, you wouldn't have anything to re-learn.

Basic counting skills also helps.

But thinking Americans are happy with the selection? You're kidding me.

Our political shelves are as empty as the shelves in the stores in Moscow.

Sometimes, I just shrug. But at other times? Unlike an SAT test you could take, that if you excelled would give you a shot at a tip-top school; that's not how politics is even organized, anymore! Today, you need to be a remnant of your dad's sperm count, to run for office with a familiar name.

You need Madison Avenue handlers. And, marketeering techniques. Just to get your name out there. Heck, once Frank Sinatra had to hire teenagers, who'd faint when he came into the room. Yes. He was very talented. Just remember this: IT WASN'T ENOUGH!

So there ya go.

The donks are obviously "agenda setting."

What if the GOP needs a new agenda of their own? Maybe, they'd have to re-work some of the things that get rejected?

Again, DeLay is honest. He spent almost two dozen years in the House. He says impeaching Clinton in the House came back and bit a number of republicans hard, on the arse.

DeLay's? Nancy Pelosi did that. In 1998. To teach him a thing or two about wielding power.

Oh, the republicans "aren't going to go away." Remember, they are the other team! More than welcome to 49%. Or less. What a discount!

Behind the scenes, though, those clowns are very efficient. Fred Astaire didn't handle the steps any better.

The Republicans aren't going to go away, but even in that party the liberal agenda is beginning to make headway - true conservatives are becoming a dying breed.

conservative says Broder is senile. Well I hate to break it to the likes of conservative democrat here, but Harry Reid is no young whipper snapper himself. He is in fact an older richer guy from Las Vegas who has made a complete a** of himself and his party time and again. He will end up being as popular nationally as Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich.

Cap'n Ed, first off hope your wife is doing well. Organ donation is truly a gift of life. As far as Broder's opinion and The senate's support for the majority leader I think it breaks down to 2 parts for me. First, your comment expressing the Democrat's FEAR of Mr. Broder and the mean ole terrorists in Iraq is really silly. it's like saying Chevy Chase in Vacation convinces the family to go on a trip and the rest of the willing, supportive, family goes along and when the car breaks down on the road Chevy's been driving on and when he can't drive anymore he blames his wife for turning around and going home before the car can't make it anymore.BUT, unfortunately he never said exactly where they were going and didn't leave a map to go by. Plain and simple, the greatest mistake of this President was to not fully explain to the public what THEY KNEW would happen and didn't tell the American people about Iraq and now they don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Second the expression of solidarity from the Democrats actually looks genuine, compared to the strong arm tactics that Tom Delay and Karl Rove used on their faithful as an ultimatum.

Reported in 'E and P':

"Actually, Broder may not be that optimistic about the war, either. MediaMatters.org reported that the columnist, during an XM Radio interview today, told Bob Edwards he's "really doubtful" that President Bush can "salvage something that would look like a victory in Iraq." Broder added that "public opinion in this country says the Democrats are right" in their efforts to end the war."

Well, to me that comes pretty close to saying just what Reid said.

After all his passing of public gas we're left with Broder joining Reid's circle of criticism of the war.

It's no wonder he said in E and P he wouldn't return to the topic again.
